Elements belonging to the alkaline earth metals are beryllium (Be), Magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), Strontium (Sr), Barium (Ba), and Radiumm (Ra). Radium is radioactive.
a. The properties of alkali metals
- A metal that is lightweight and highly reactive
- Silvery white colored
- The larger the number the more reactive metal atom
- The boiling point and melting point higher than the alkali metals.
b. Preparation of alkali metal
Alkaline earth metals can be obtained by electrolysis of its fused salts or hydroxides. For example, electrolysis of molten MgCl2 Magnesium metal thus obtained.
